Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours. (Luke 15:31)
When the father says, “All that I have is yours,” he also means, “All that you have is mine (or has come from me).” You have nothing that has not been received from me. All that you have is mine. The older son definitely didn’t see it that way. He was under the impression that the father had not given him anything. In reality the father had given him everything.
There is no such thing as private property, personal possessions, earthly riches. The cattle on a thousand hills belongs to the Lord. Matter of fact, the earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof. We don’t own anything; everything belongs to him.
God does give us things, but not to possess; he gives us all things freely to enjoy. That is, the purpose for which God blesses us is for our enjoyment and our stewardship. He wants us to enjoy the things that he gives us through their proper stewardship. But we are never to forget that all things are his. This is what it means to say that he is all in all.
How foolish of us to think that we could ever pull ourselves up by our own bootstraps. If we are climbing the staircase to success, its only because God is drawing the stairs for us. He makes us victorious. He makes us successful. He sends his rain of blessing upon us. All things belong to him, even our very lives.
If we meditate on these things today, it will instill in us a new thankfulness and a new joy.
