You have made known to me the path of life . . . (Psalm 16:11)
When we think about the “path” of life, we typically think about a road, a way, a street, an avenue.
A traditional path is objective; it is obviously a path, regardless of whether anyone is walking it or not. But the path of life is not this kind of a path. It does not have lanes or a shoulder or entrances or exits. It is not created by a system of lines, or boundaries within which you must remain or else you are outside of the faith. That kind of path is the path of religion.
The path of life consists only of the footprints of Jesus. He forged the path when he walked it, and those who have walked it after him have done so only through the imitation of him. This is why when Thomas said that he didn’t know the way, Jesus responded, “I am the way . . . ” (John 14:6)
The path of life is Jesus Christ. It is not a prescribed way of living that consists of dos and don’ts, boundaries and borders. There are no Christian police who will pull you over if you’re going too fast or too slow. There’s no fast lane or slow lane. And there is only one direction; heavenward. This is why in the book of Acts the Christian life is called simply, “the Way” (Acts 9:2; 19:9, 23; 24:14, 22).
When God makes this path known to you, he does so by making his son, Jesus Christ, known to you. And as you walk in his steps, you find that his path leads only to life, and his way to the living.
Let’s remember today as we meditate on this verse that we are not meditating on a system of Christian principles that are designed to give us success in life, but on the actual person of Jesus Christ. You have made known to me the path of life . . . and his name is Jesus!
